The researchers say a proposed digital watermark to prevent artificial intelligence (AI) models from modifying real photos could simply be saved as a JPEG file, suggesting that the growth of photorealistic deepfakes will be more difficult to handle than originally thought.

While AI can only generate images from text cues, such as the images of the Pope in a puffer coat that have recently gone viral, they can also be used to alter existing photographs, creating realistic pictures of events that never happened. ABOUT…
